If you have a cracked, failing, or unsalvageable tooth, same day dental implants in Austin may allow the tooth to be removed and an implant placed during the same appointment. In some cases, a temporary tooth can also be placed before you leave.
Same day dental implants, also called immediate dental implants, place the implant into the fresh extraction socket rather than waiting months for the socket to heal first.
At Austin Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, Dr. Alexander Nguyen, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, uses 3D imaging to determine whether immediate dental implants in Austin are right for you. Dr. Madeleine Chung plans the final crown in the same office.

A dental implant is a small titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. Bone grows tightly against its surface over the following months, a process called osseointegration.
The implant still needs approximately three to six months to integrate with the bone before the permanent crown is placed. Immediate placement simply combines extraction and implant placement into one surgical visit.
That changes the sequence rather than the biology. Bone also begins to shrink as soon as a tooth is removed, and an implant set into the fresh socket, with grafting material around it, helps support the shape of the ridge.
This page covers immediate placement for one tooth or a few teeth. Replacing a full arch in a single day is covered on our teeth in a day page, and a fixed bridge carried by four to six implants on our All-on-X in Austin page. Our implant dentistry services cover the full range.
This is the most important distinction on the page.
Same day implant means the implant is placed when the tooth is extracted.
Same day tooth means a temporary crown is attached before you leave.
Many patients get the implant the same day and a temporary tooth rather than the final crown. The permanent crown is generally made after the implant has integrated, three to six months later.
A temporary crown is possible when the implant has enough initial stability. Otherwise, a healing abutment or removable temporary can protect the implant while it heals.
Most patients asking about same day implants have a visible front tooth, often one fractured at the gum line, and that space cannot be hidden the way a back molar can.
In a front tooth case the goal is that you leave with a tooth in the space. Which of the three options that turns out to be depends on how firmly the implant anchors on the day.
A CBCT 3D scan determines whether immediate placement is appropriate. Ideal candidates generally have:
Smoking, significant bone loss, or active infection may make staged treatment safer. If immediate placement is not appropriate, the tooth can be removed, the site grafted with bone grafting when needed, and the implant placed after healing.
A staged plan is a safety decision, not a failure. When the scan shows active infection, a damaged socket wall, or too little bone to hold the implant still, the safer route is to remove the tooth, graft the site, and place the implant once it has healed. The finished tooth is the same.
| Immediate (Same Day) | Staged (Delayed) | |
|---|---|---|
| Surgical visits | One, extraction and implant together | Two, implant months after extraction |
| Time to the final crown | Approximately three to six months | Longer, the socket heals first |
| Site requirements | Intact walls, no active infection, good stability | Flexible, suits thin bone and infected sites |
| While healing | Temporary crown, healing abutment, or flipper | Removable temporary |
| Generally suits | A failing tooth with healthy surrounding bone | Damaged sockets and inadequate bone |
The surgical visit typically takes one to two hours. IV sedation dentistry is available in our office.
For the right patient, tooth extraction and implant placement in Austin can provide:
Immediate placement is not always the safest choice. Staged treatment may be recommended when infection, damaged socket walls, or inadequate bone is present.
Most patients experience manageable soreness and swelling. Swelling typically peaks around the second day and improves during the first week.
Cold compresses and sleeping with your head slightly elevated can help. Avoid straws and forceful spitting.
Eat soft foods, avoid smoking and vaping, and protect any temporary crown from heavy biting pressure. Follow your post-operative instructions and contact the office if swelling worsens after day three, you develop a fever, or your temporary becomes loose.

Where an implant sits, and at what angle, shapes what the final crown can look like.
Dr. Alexander Nguyen, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, performs the implant surgery, while Dr. Madeleine Chung plans the final restoration. Surgical and restorative treatment are coordinated under one roof.
IV sedation is available in-house at our Southwest Austin office on Highway 290, serving Oak Hill, Circle C, Dripping Springs, Bee Cave, and surrounding communities.
Can I get an implant the same day as an extraction?
Yes, if your bone, socket, gums, and overall health meet the requirements for immediate placement. A CBCT 3D scan and an examination decide it. When the site does not meet those requirements, the tooth can be removed and the implant placed after healing.
What is the difference between a same day implant and a same day tooth?
A same day implant means the implant is placed the day the tooth is removed. A same day tooth means a temporary crown is attached before you leave. Many patients receive the implant the same day and a temporary tooth rather than the final crown.
Will I leave with a tooth?
Often. If the implant is stable enough, a temporary crown can be attached. Otherwise, a healing abutment or a removable temporary can be used while the implant heals, so a visible gap can generally be avoided in a front tooth position.
Does having the extraction and implant done together hurt?
The surgery is performed with local anesthetic, so you should not feel sharp pain during it. IV sedation is available in our office for patients who prefer it. Afterward, most patients describe pressure and soreness rather than severe pain.
Can an infected tooth receive an immediate implant?
An active abscess may require staged treatment. Your 3D scan and examination determine the safest approach. A small, long standing area of inflammation at the root tip can often be cleaned out and the implant still placed at the same visit.
What happens if the implant is not stable enough on surgery day?
That is a normal decision point rather than a complication. The implant is left undisturbed under a healing abutment, and a removable temporary is used instead. The implant is still healing on the same schedule, simply protected from early biting force.
How long does treatment take?
The surgical appointment is typically one to two hours, followed by approximately three to six months of implant healing before the permanent crown. The final crown is then completed over two shorter restorative visits.
How much do same day dental implants cost in Austin?
Cost depends on the implant, extraction, grafting, temporary tooth, final crown, and sedation. A consultation and 3D scan provide an individualized written treatment plan listing each stage of your care before anything begins.
A 3D scan can determine whether immediate implant placement is right for you, and what you would leave with on surgery day. Dr. Alexander Nguyen will review your images with you.
